White-Label Exchange Vendor Due Diligence: The Checklist

Before you sign with a white-label crypto exchange provider, run this due-diligence checklist — technology, security, liquidity, compliance, commercials, support, and exit terms.

Choosing a white-label provider is a multi-year commitment that's expensive to reverse. A demo looks great; the risks live in what the demo doesn't show. Use this checklist to pressure-test every vendor before you sign.

1. Technology

  • Matching engine performance — throughput and latency under load, not just a quiet demo. Ask for benchmarks. See inside a matching engine.
  • Risk & liquidation — how the liquidation engine and insurance fund behave in a fast market.
  • Products & roadmap — does it support what you'll grow into (spot, perps, options), or will you re-platform?
  • Scalability — proven volume ceilings, and what happens at 10× your launch load.

2. Security

  • Independent audits and penetration tests (recent, with reports you can read).
  • Custody model and key management — see custody models.
  • Incident history and disclosure practices. Ask directly: "What's the worst outage you've had, and what changed after?"

3. Liquidity

  • Bundled liquidity vs. bring-your-own, and the cost of each.
  • Market-maker relationships and how the cold-start problem is handled.

4. Compliance

  • KYC/AML tooling and vendors (KYC/AML for exchanges).
  • Jurisdictions supported, and whether the platform fits your target licensing regime.
  • Reporting, surveillance, and audit-trail capabilities.

5. Commercials

  • Pricing model and true cost of ownership — decode it with our pricing-models guide.
  • What's included vs. billed separately, and any volume caps or minimums.

6. Support & references

  • SLA specifics: uptime guarantee, response times, escalation paths, and penalties for breach.
  • Talk to current clients — ideally ones at your scale — and ask what they'd change.

Score every vendor the same way

The value of a checklist is consistency. Run all six sections on every shortlisted provider and score them side by side; the real differences surface fast — and they're rarely the headline price. This pairs with how to choose a white-label provider and the full launch cost breakdown.

The takeaway

Diligence is cheap; switching providers isn't. Interrogate technology, security, liquidity, compliance, commercials, and exit terms with the same rubric for every vendor — and weight the answers you have to dig for most heavily.
