Perp DEX vs. Centralized Perpetuals: Which Model to Launch
On-chain perpetual DEXs are the fastest-growing venue type in crypto. How perp DEXs and centralized perpetuals differ on custody, liquidity, latency, and compliance — and which model fits your launch.
The single biggest structural shift in crypto derivatives right now is on-chain. Perpetual DEXs — venues where perpetual futures trade against smart contracts rather than a centralized order book — have gone from a rounding error to a serious share of the market. If you're launching a perps venue, "CEX or DEX?" is now a real strategic question, not a foregone conclusion.
The numbers behind the shift
Perp DEX volume grew roughly 8×, from $81.74B to $739.48B monthly, while decentralized venues' share of total perpetuals volume rose from 2.0% to 10.2% between January 2024 and January 2026 (Datawallet).
By late 2025, on-chain perps were clearing more than $1 trillion in monthly volume (CoinDesk via Yahoo Finance), and a single purpose-built venue reportedly accounted for around 70% of on-chain perpetual volume (Nadcab). This is no longer a niche.
How the two models differ
| Centralized perpetuals (CEX) | Perpetual DEX | |
|---|---|---|
| Custody | Exchange holds funds | Self-custody / smart contract |
| Matching | Off-chain matching engine | On-chain order book or AMM/oracle model |
| Latency | Sub-millisecond achievable | Bounded by block time / L2 |
| Liquidity | Market makers, internal books | On-chain LPs, vaults, external MMs |
| Compliance | KYC/AML at the venue | Varies; often permissionless (a regulatory grey zone) |
| Cold-start | Hard — you own the liquidity problem | Hard — plus smart-contract + oracle risk |
Neither is "better." They serve different users and carry different operational and regulatory weight.
Which should you launch?
- Launch a CEX-style perps venue if you want control over latency and liquidity, plan to serve regulated or institutional flow, and want the most mature operational toolset. This is still where the majority of volume lives.
- Lean toward a perp DEX if self-custody is core to your brand, your users are crypto-native, and you're comfortable owning smart-contract, oracle, and liquidation risk on-chain.
- Many operators do both — a centralized venue for depth and institutions, an on-chain product for the crypto-native segment, sharing brand and treasury.
Whichever you choose, the hard parts are the same: a fast, correct matching and risk engine, real liquidity, and a clean launch. That's the case for not building the plumbing yourself — see white-label vs. building from scratch and how to launch a derivatives exchange.
The takeaway
Perp DEXs are the fastest-growing venue type in crypto and deserve a place in your thinking — but centralized perpetuals still hold the depth, latency, and compliance profile most operators need. Pick the model that matches your users and your regulatory ambitions, and make sure your infrastructure can support the one (or both) you choose.
