Options Greeks Explained: Delta, Gamma, Theta, Vega
The options Greeks — delta, gamma, theta, vega and rho — measure how an option's price reacts to the market. What each one means for a crypto trader.
The "Greeks" are a set of risk measures — delta, gamma, theta, vega and rho — that describe how an option's price is expected to move when something in the market changes: the underlying price, time, or volatility. Each Greek isolates one source of risk, which is what lets traders manage an options position instead of just guessing at it. Here's what each one means, in plain terms.
Why the Greeks exist
An option's price depends on several moving parts at once — the price of the underlying, how much time is left, and how volatile the market is. The Greeks break that single price into separate sensitivities so you can see which variable is driving your position (Investopedia). They're the standard language of options risk, on Bitcoin and Ether just as much as on equities.
The five Greeks
- Delta — how much the option price moves per $1 move in the underlying. A delta of 0.5 means the option gains about $0.50 if Bitcoin rises $1. It also approximates the option's directional exposure.
- Gamma — how fast delta itself changes as the underlying moves. High gamma means your directional exposure shifts quickly — the source of both opportunity and danger near the strike.
- Theta — time decay. How much value the option loses each day, all else equal. Theta works against buyers and for sellers.
- Vega — sensitivity to implied volatility. When the market's expected volatility rises, option prices rise; vega measures by how much.
- Rho — sensitivity to interest rates. The least important for short-dated crypto options, but part of the standard set.
Why they matter more in crypto
Crypto is more volatile than most traditional markets, which makes vega and gamma especially live: implied volatility can swing hard around catalysts, and a position that looked delta-neutral can flip quickly.
