The core idea
When you buy on margin, your own funds act as collateral for a larger exposure (Investopedia). If you post $1,000 as margin and trade a $5,000 position, you're at 5x leverage — a 1% move in the market becomes a 5% move on your capital, in either direction. Margin is the mechanism; leverage is the result.
Margin vs. leverage vs. liquidation
These three go together:
- Margin — the collateral you post to open and hold a position.
- Leverage — the multiple of exposure that margin buys you (5x, 10x, up to 125x on some venues).
- Liquidation — what happens when losses eat into your margin past the maintenance threshold: the venue force-closes the position to stop the loss going negative (Investopedia). Knowing your liquidation price before you enter is the single most important habit in margin trading.
Isolated vs. cross margin
How your collateral is allocated changes your risk profile completely:
- Isolated margin — collateral is fixed to one position. If it's liquidated, you lose only what you allocated to it. Losses are contained.
- Cross margin — your whole balance backs your positions, so a winning trade can support a losing one — but a bad move can put your entire balance at risk.
